To keep your jewellery fabulous and fresh, we have created this easy, how-to guide to caring for your costume jewellery.
Last On, First Off
Put your jewellery on after you put your clothes on and before you take your clothes off. By doing this, you will ensure that your clothing doesn't get caught on your favourite dress or t-shirt when you are removing your clothing. An accidental pull of your necklace whilst taking off your clothing can cause a chain or string to break!
Remove your jewellery during activities. When performing everyday tasks, such as laundry, cooking, or gardening, remove your jewellery to prevent physical damage or exposure to cleaning chemicals or cleaning fluids.
Put jewellery on after applying hairspray and makeup. Keeping your jewellery dry is essential. Perfumes, hairspray, lotions and makeup usually contain harsh chemicals that can damage your jewellery. By waiting until you have completed your beauty routine you can avoid potential damage.
Keep your jewellery tarnish free by keeping your jewellery dry
Don't wash dishes or do the laundry with your jewellery on. Many cleaning products that come in contact with your jewellery that can take off the finish because of the harsh chemicals.
Don't wear jewellery in pool or at the spa. Chlorinated water can react with the metals found in jewellery’ which will cause your necklace or bracelet to change colour.
Don't use jewellery cleaner. Cleaner made for silver, gold, or platinum is way too harsh for costume jewellery, which is usually plated with these precious metals. We recommend using a soft, clean cloth to clean your jewellery. A wipe and a gentle polish will remove anything that has got on the jewellery throughout the day and keep it from loosing it's shine.
Don't put on lotion or perfume with your jewellery already on. For the same reasons listed above, lotions and perfumes that are not 100% natural can react with your jewellery.
Store your costume jewellery properly to keep it looking great!
Keep your jewellery secure. Store your jewellery in a jewellery box or other secure container that will prevent your jewellery from moving around. You can also store your jewellery in a silk or velvet pouch and put each pouch in a decorative shoebox.
Use Anti-tarnish Paper. When storing your fashion jewellery try wrapping each piece in anti-tarnish paper. If you don't have anti-tarnish paper use an optical cloth instead!
Avoid Air! The air around us is what makes metal tarnish. We recommend using a Ziploc or sandwich bag with the air squeezed out to prevent oxidisation.
Last but not least… Don’t sleep in your jewellery. It can be very tempting to go to bed with your earrings still in or rings still on but this can be extremely damaging if you do it frequently. Your body releases chemicals from the skin over night, especially if you have been eating anything with garlic or other strong flavours, and this can causing the plating of costume jewellery to change colour and tarnish. Stone loss, scratching and even breakage can happen overnight so think about jewellery like you would your make up and take it off before you get into bed!
